Peak District Village of Winster
Winster is a picturesque former lead mining village located in the Peak District National Park
approximately four miles west of Matlock and six miles south of Bakewell.
It is one of the oldest and most picturesque villages in the Peak District and was
once the centre of the local lead mining industry. The village still has the feel of
a lead mining centre, with rows of old miners cottages clinging to the hill side north of the village.
The most prominent building in the village is the Market House which stands in the centre of Main
Street and was the first property in Derbyshire to be adopted by the National Trust (in 1906). During
the summer months (usually late June or early July) Winster proudly hosts Wakes Week, where the
Winster Morris Men, one of the oldest morris dancing troops in the country, can be found performing
the famous Winster Gallop outside the Market House.
Unlike many neighbouring villages, Winster still has a post office and well stocked village shop from
which you can pre-order provisions for your holiday. Winster used to be full of pubs and at one time
there were over twenty of them. However only two remain, the Bowling Green and Miners Standard, both
renowned for their excellent fare and real ales. The post office, shop and Bowling Green are all within
a minutes stroll of Stoneheath Cottage, but be prepared for a steep walk to the pub at the top of the
village, the Miners Standard!
